ARTIST STATEMENT: I Was born in Roswell, New Mexico in 1956. I changed careers in 2000 tfrom grapic designer to fine art.
Capturing “other people’s passions” on canvas has been a theme of mine for years. Everyday people working or doing the things they love. Dancing, playing music, or sailing small yachts on a little lake. One recent series of paintings I completed is of culinary students pursuing their art. These are the stories and emotions I find intriguing and I attempt to convey them on canvas.
I have always tried to paint within the visual spectrum that is, color and light that appear in nature. I paint mainly from photos that I have taken; dancers rarely hold the poses I try to paint. I then print out a favorite, sketch out large images onto gessoed boards and begin to fill in the piece starting with large shapes. I work around the panel and at all the times keeping the values in check. Arriving at the focal point, which in many cases may be a face, I slow down to spend more time on what I consider to be the heart of the painting or story.
Recently I have begun to paint more with a pallet knife. This "tool" allows me to work large areas as a foundation, which I allow to dry. I then come back over the areas to develop the needed layers. This takes longer to finish a piece but I'm am enjoying the process and am quite pleased with the results.
